High on the Hog

Lory and I have talked a number of times about the Serendipity book series, a favorite of hers. Separate from the series, if you think of serendipity as a lucky accident, my reading is often serendipitous. I think some of the conversations Lory and I had early on were about connections; one thing leading to another. Combine these two ideas and they account for a lot of my book choices.

Just yesterday I wrote a blog post, “The Mother of Soul Food”, about Edna Lewis. I read a fascinating article about her in the Smithsonian. Today I was reading The New Yorker, another favorite, and learned about Stephen Satterfield, another chef who heightened the profile of Black Southern cooking.

Jessica B. Harris wrote a book, High on the Hog, that led to a Netflix television series that Satterfield hosted. I’ve reserved the book and I’m going to check out the show. Yesterday, this topic was nowhere on my mind. Today, it is definitely on my mind. My reading often goes like this.

Sometimes my reading is a bit like a ship being tossed about on the sea.

High on the Hog is totally unplanned, but I’m looking forward to it.
