Reading on a Budget

My friend Sharon was just telling me about a book event she is attending next week. It is essentially a book club that is meeting at a local pub. This alone is not a novel idea (yes, pun intended). Ted is a big fan of anything involving books and a beer so I asked Sharon for more details about this event.

Not only are they hosting a book club meeting at a fun location, the organizers have partnered with the local library branch to have books available to borrow for individuals interested in participating. This collaboration and thoughtful idea got me thinking. How many readers are not reading or reading less due to financial reasons? Would people read more if books were readily available at little or no cost? I imagine the answer is yes.

So kudos to this pub, Pipe the Side Brewing, the book club organizers, and the North Carroll branch of the Carroll County Public Library for finding an interesting way to encourage reading.

I can see a podcast episode devoted to reading on a budget. I will talk to Ted about the idea and see what we can do about adding that to our plans.
