Add Math to Your Reading

A book caught my eye. No surprise, I saw it in a review by my favorite reviewer, Michael Dirda.

The book is Once Upon A Prime: The Wondrous Connections Between Math and Literature by Sarah Hart. I was a good student, but math was not my strongest subject. It was interesting back then, but not as schoolwork. Today, it still interests me. I’ve thought about reteaching myself algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. I don’t know that it will ever happen but I think about it.

I’ve read interesting books about math including Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea by Charles Seife. Dirda and Hart talk about Norman Juster’s The Phantom Tollbooth, Lewis Carroll and Martin Gardner. Good stuff! Lory will like this. Once Upon A Prime includes a chapter about managing the number of options in the Choose Your Own Adventure books.

Combining math and reading might not seem intuitive to many of you, but don’t too casually write it off. You might surprise yourself.
